The article aims to characterize food self-sufficiency with a focus on sustainability in the province of Esmeraldas, Republic of Ecuador. The characterization is carried out first, specifying from three criteria (productive efficiency, sustainability and nutrition) the sustainable approach of this process in the selected region and second, the factors that limit self-sufficiency are identified. The research demonstrated: the importance of characterizing food self-sufficiency with this approach; that in the province of Esmeraldas the process has limitations to guarantee, over time, a production capable of satisfying the demands of a growing local population, and that the fundamental limitations of self-reliance are in the inefficient production of basic food products , at a high environmental cost, and that in the nutritious compromises the health of the labor force population and its productivity.
